Overview

JAWS come in two models. The original size and a medium version for individuals with smaller stature or who might just prefer a lighter, more compact terminal device. JAWS are the answer for many of the challenges that a person with a hand absence face. JAWS are unique and powerfully functional. JAWS are heavy duty, voluntary opening, prehensile-style, terminal devices. JAWS can be used with or without a cable harness system for versatility. JAWS can be mounted to a “myo” or electric arm with a special myo to body powered adapter. JAWS were conceived by amputee Bob Radocy, VP of Fillauer TRS Inc. Bob kept receiving inquiries from persons missing a hand, especially those using “myo” or electric hands frustrated with the electric technology’s performance but not wanting to go full voluntary closing, body power with a harness system. These individuals wanted to hold tools, handles, ride ATVs and snowmobiles, as well as other “off road” and “on water” vehicles like jet skis. Additionally, there was a need to safely control and steer drivable farm and ranch equipment. JAWS were conceptualized with these needs “in mind” and over a period of two years was designed and developed. The uses for these JAWS devices are endless.

JAWS uses “Vector” mechanics and technology. Vector technology was championed by Dr. Lawrence Carlson beginning in the 1990s into the 2000s. Dr. Carlson is a professor emeritus of mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Vector technology allows the grip force of the prosthesis to be easily adjusted in force by changing the direction through which the spring force acts. This adjustability provides significant versatility, as well as the ability to achieve much higher gripping forces than are available in most voluntary opening terminal devices. Bob, who has worked closely with Dr. Carlson on the vector technology, took the concept and embedded it into JAWS. Combining the vector technology into heavy duty gripping terminal devices proved to be the perfect “match” of concepts. Now is your chance to EXPERIENCE JAWS TECHNOLOGY!

*JAWS XFS – JAWS (Original size) is now also available with a heavy-duty spring option, JAWS XFS (Xtra Force Spring). The JAWS XFS comes with a Main Spring which has nearly 40% more force than the stock spring.

*Note: JAWS XFS is only intended for users who need extremely strong gripping forces. JAWS XFS should be used with extra caution, especially in the highest force position, because “releasing the grip” has an extremely high threshold. Additionally, if operating the JAWS XFS with a traditional cable system it may cause premature wear and possible failure of the cable system due to the extra force required to operate the TD. Standard JAWS TDs can be retro-fitted with the XFS Spring option. Please contact us for details.
